When a mystery is too overpowering, one dare not disobey

You wake up where all cats are grey to find yourself facing a narrow stone staircase. On each side there are no handlebars. The way down is divided by 3 landings. Prior to the first landing there are 11 steps, then 30 until the second and finally 67 to be climbed down in order for the bottom area to be reached. The bottom is opaque.
You are ready to take your first step when you notice 3 large clear photographs. One has an edelweiss on it, the other a house surrounded by evergreen trees while the last introduces you to a little girl with a sly pale face, expressive dark eyebrows and shinny black hair rolling over her cheeks and covering her two narrow naked white shoulders.
You begin your descent.
