Inked cover sample featuring The Shadow.

During WWI, Kent Allard was a spy and a famed aviator who crashed in the South American jungles. He made a fortune in that region (where he discovered a city of gold) before he returned to New York. There, he forced playboy Lamont Cranston to occasionally have his identity adopted by him when necessary due to their physical resemblance. The Shadow worked with a network of agents, men who owed him a life debt. Margo Lane is a friend and companion to Allard, and spies for his vigilante alter ego as well. He has been trained in the hidden city of Shambalah in martial arts, learned to control his body's vital functions, has acquired longevity, and is also able to hypnotize and 'cloud men's minds'. The Shadow has also used a series of equipment such as suction cups on his hands and knees to climb buildings, occasionally flown an early version of a helicopter referred to as 'Autogyro' or 'Gyrocopter', and also carries various vials of acid and flash powders. His signature weapons are twin .45-caliber M1911 semi-automatic pistols as well as a pair of LAR Grizzly .45-caliber Win Mag pistols.

The Shadow is a character created by American magazine publishers Street & Smith and writer Walter B. Gibson. Originally created to be a mysterious radio show narrator, and developed into a distinct literary character in 1931 by Gibson, The Shadow has been adapted into other forms of media, including American comic books, comic strips, serials, video games, and at least five feature films.
